Mounted games are amongst the oldest of all equestrian skills. During the 1860's the British in Asia adopted polo and other mounted games in an effort to relieve the tedium of army life for officers, as well as to improve their horsemanship. These exercises became known as 'gymkhana' games, a word of Anglo-Indian derivation meaning 'a field day on horseback'.
